This morning started with a high flanker castration – an incompletely descended testicle, that either is just outside the inguinal canal or moves freely in and out of the inguinal canal.

Testes normally begin to form in the male fetus in the abdomen near the kidneys and begin to pass through the inguinal canal between 9 and 10 months of age and are usually fully descended into the scrotum between 30 days before and 10 days after birth in the normal colt. Prevalence of left and right testicular retention is nearly equal, though retained left testes are more often in the abdomen while the right retained testicle is more often in the inguinal canal and often are high flankers.
These testicles can be removed in the standing patient by an experienced veterinarian. In this image the smaller testicle is the high flanker, with the larger testicle a normal scrotal testicle.
